Battle for the Troops - April 1st at Starrs Mill H.S.
Battle for the Troops will take place on Thursday, April 1st at Starr’s Mill, during the soccer matches between Starr’s Mill vs. McIntosh from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM at Starr’s Mill HS.
During the weeks prior to the event, they will be collecting food items and cash donations to send packages to soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Here are the items the soldiers are most in need of:
Toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, aftershave, deodorant, face wash, eye drops, sunscreen, baby wipes, insect repellant, dried fruit, granola bars, energy bars, beef jerky, hand sanitizer, soap, black socks, battery shavers, skin lotions, Chef Boyardee Ravioli with pop-top cans and similar Chef Boyardee products, tuna in a pouch, music CDs (mixes made with new music especially), DVDs, magazines, paperback books, Pringles, fruit juice boxes, and Yoohoo! boxed drinks.
Starting the week of March 15, there will be bins at both High Schools available for items to be dropped off. There will also be bins in the stadium on April 1st, for items to be dropped off.
The schools will also be selling T-Shirts and wristbands, especially made for this event as a fundraiser. Any cash left over after all postage, etc. is paid, will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
The schools will also have a large banner at each school, so people can write the names of loved ones who are or have been deployed, to be honored during the event.
During the games, the schools will invite Fayette County families, who have family members deployed to the game and honor them. There will be a ceremony and entertainment including the school band and a Color Guard from Ft. McPherson between the games.
The schools and the teams are hoping that other AFC Lightning families will help us make this event a success, by attending the games and donating items and/or purchasing T-Shirts and wristbands.
