Thompson joined the AFC Lightning in 2005.  Thompson is currently the U16 - U19 Girls Coordinator.  

Thompson’s coaching career started in 2000, as a Graduate Assistant at Wingate University in North Carolina.  Thompson then became the head coach of Wingate University women’s soccer team from 2000-2004.  During these five years, Wingate had an overall record of 60-33-4, including a still school best record of 14-4-2 in 2002. 

In addition to his college duties, Thompson also was a coach at nearby club, FC Carolina Alliance.  At FC Carolina Alliance, he coached the U18 Men’s team.  Thompson also served on the North Carolina ODP staff for three years.

As a youth player, Thompson competed on the ’78 and ’77 AFC teams.  He attended Mars Hill College, in North Carolina, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2000.  At Mars Hill, he was named as the program’s first All American in 1998 after leading the nation in goals scored with 26.  Thompson was elected into the Mars Hill College Hall of Fame in 2007 and was inducted into the to the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame in 2009.

Thompson currently holds the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.  Andy and his wife of seven years, Andrea, reside in Fayetteville. They are the very proud parents of Savannah Dawn Thompson.
